📖 Reading passage (B1–B2 level)
From The Secret Garden – Chapter 5 (adapted)
Mary Lennox had never seen a place so strange and silent.
Misselthwaite Manor was huge and old, with many dark corridors and closed doors.
The wind blew around the house and made it sound as if someone were whispering.
Mary often felt lonely. Everyone in the house seemed busy or afraid to speak.
One day, while walking in the gardens, she noticed an old wall covered with ivy.
Behind it, she thought she heard a bird singing.
Curious, Mary looked for a way in.
After a few days, she found a small, rusty key buried in the soil.
Could it open the hidden door in the wall?
Her heart began to beat faster as she searched for the lock.
When she finally turned the key, the door opened with a creak —
and before her eyes was a secret garden, wild and full of life.
